Welcome

This is a Web-based Community for the development and sharing of an assorted variety of mathematics content. It is intended to serve as a virtual meeting place for the exchange of ideas pertaining to mathematics courses at UTSA. There are many resources available beyond the News Articles listed below. Especially important is the Forum section that you can select from panel at left labeled Modules. Thank you and enjoy.   –Crissy Ruffo

calculus: Calculus I Optimization Problem
SAGE Consider the following problem: A farmer with 750 ft of fencing wants to enclose a rectangular area and then divide it into four pens with fencing parallel to one side of the rectangle. What is the largest possible total area of the four pens? Here is a SAGE program to estimate the answer using both the animate and the @interact commands. Then I settle the question using calculus methods.

graphing: Plot Tool
SAGE This worksheet uses the @interact SAGE function to create a GUI that's will plot up to 3 graphs on a single axis, and has the option to fit the y-axis to the given functions (similar to the "zoom fit" option on TI graphing calculators). Designed to help visualize the relationship between a function and it's first and second derivatives.  Here is an example of what the output looks like:Plot Tool Sage output

numerical: Nonlinear One Variable Equation Numerical Solver
SAGE This worksheet collects together 6 separate SAGE scripts, based on classical algorithms, designed to find numerical solutions to the equation f(x)=0, when x cannot be explicitly solved for. Each of the scripts can be found in the other worksheets in this site. Here is an example of the output:
