UMB Scholars Program at UTSA

Accepting Applications Now!

The Undergraduate Mathematics and Biology (UMB) Scholars Program is accepting applications for the 2008-2009 academic year. To be eligible, you must be entering your sophomore year at UTSA and majoring in either biology, mathematics or statistics. You must also be a U.S. Citizen or a U.S. Permanent Resident.

UTSA's UMB Scholars Program Completes Its First Year

The UMB Scholars Program at UTSA is supported by a $900,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) as part of its Undergraduate Mathematics and Biology (UBM) Initiative. The program officially started at UTSA on September 1, 2007. During its inaugural year, 10 undergraduates were named UMB Scholars. Three Scholars will have graduated by the end of this summer. UMB Scholar Angelean Hendrix graduates "Magna Cum Laude"

UMB Scholar Angelean ("Angel") Hendrix was part of the first cohort of UMB Scholars to graduate from UTSA. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with Tier 2 University Honors. Angel turned down an offer from Rice University for a position in the Biomathematics Graduate Program at North Carolina State University. She has decided to delay the start of her doctoral work until the Fall 2008 semester due to the imminent arrival of a second daughter this August.

Phil Ulinski Gives First UMB Scholars Lecture

Dr. Philip Ulinski from the University of Chicago gave the first seminar in the UMB Computational Biology Seminar Series on April 17th to a large group of faculty and students. The title of his presentation was: Stability and Persistence in Visual Cortex. An abstract of this talk can be downloaded here.

UMB Scholar Program Highlighted in SA Business Journal

The UMB Scholars Program at UTSA was featured in an article by the San Antonio Business Journal. Dr. Nandini Kannan, Co-PI on the NSF grant was quoted as saying: "One of the problems this country faces is a shortage of well trained students in these disciplines", referring to biology, math and statistics. David Barraza Submits First UMB Sponsored Abstract to Society for Neuroscience

UMB Scholar David Barraza has submitted the first Abstract to the Society for Neuroscience based on research sponsored in part by the UMB Scholars program. This year's meeting is November 3-7 and is being held in San Diego, CA. You can read more about the meeting by clicking here.

Texas Legislature's Resolution HR 253 Congratulates UTSA on UMB Grant

The 80th session of the Texas Legislature passed resolution HR 253 congratulating UTSA for the UMB Scholars grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Sponsoring the resolution was Rep. Joaquin Castro. You can download a copy of HR 253 by clicking here.

Kay Robbins to Give MATLAB Workshop August 21st

MATLAB is a 4th generation computer language especially well-designed for the analysis and display of experimental data. MATLAB has been selected as the "common computer language" for the UMB Scholars program and all Scholars are expected to become familiar with the language if not proficient. On August 21st, 2007, Dr. Kay Robbins will give her second workshop on using MATLAB for the display of data sets. Check back here for more information.
